history of Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise developed back in the early 20th century by a man named Joseph Pilates. Originally called ‘Contrology’ the Pilates exercises focus on performing movements with precision and control. At Balanced, we love the opportunity to teach you how to move well and believe that this movement education has a carry over effect into your everyday activities and movements. This in turn, helps you to feel strong, move well, and feel connected with your body!

History of Pilates

Born in 1883 near Düsseldorf, Germany, Joseph Pilates suffered from various health issues in his youth, which led him to explore different exercise disciplines and techniques to improve his physical condition. He eventually developed a system of exercises that combined elements of yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, and Western forms of exercise.

During World War I, Pilates was interned in England along with other German nationals. It was here that he began developing his system of exercises further, using springs from beds to create resistance and aid in the rehabilitation of injured soldiers. This early form of what would become known as "Contrology" focused on strengthening and stabilising core muscles, improving posture, flexibility, and overall body awareness.

After the war, Pilates immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City, where he continued to refine and teach his method with his wife Clara. Initially embraced by dancers and athletes for its emphasis on core strength and flexibility, Pilates gradually gained popularity as a holistic exercise system for people of all ages and fitness levels. His method continued to evolve after his death in 1967, as his students and followers further developed and adapted the exercises.

Today, Pilates is practiced in various forms, from mat-based exercises to those incorporating specialised equipment like the reformer and the trapeze table. Its emphasis on controlled movements, breath awareness, and mind-body connection makes it not just a physical exercise but also a form of mental conditioning and stress relief. Not to forget the benefits in injury rehabilitation and prevention!
